Barcamp SD 4 post mortem
Posted by Dan
Barcamp went off without a hitch, as per the norm and everyone that I talked to had a most excellent time. There was the typical nuissance of there being too many people on one wireless access point (internet slower than preferred, range issues), so conversations were had with some folks about getting our hands on some true enterprise grade wireless (cisco aironet or aruba hardware), that has the capacity to properly load balance and distribute traffic across multiple radios. I did however save a whole bunch of data from the firewall, which was a different configuration than last time. I’ll have a post written up about that on shortly.
Defcamp (the hacking challenge) went off fairly well – the contest is a race to the finish and it was started on Saturday morning – so a handful of people basically holed up in an office and missed barcamp to do the hacking challenges. I’m going to have to work on that. I don’t want people missing out on barcamp because of a prize.
The food was greek this time, and was executed superbly – I think we(barcampsd) made a new friend. Daphnes greek cafe in 4s ranch area – we got a hell of a deal and were promised more of a deal next time around.
Intuit was pleased with our presence and smiled because we left the place cleaner than we found it. There are already talks to have barcamp held there again.
All in all, chalk it up to another awesome barcamp. San Diego’s community is getting a reputation for being awesome and this can do nothing but help us. Keep being awesome, everyone!
BarCamp Is THIS WEEKEND!
Posted by Dan
And thats coming up soon!
Here are some things to consider
- Camping IS ALLOWED! Bring a sleeping bag! :D
- Be courteous to fellow campers – dont torrent, or use p2p software on the barcamp wifi
- The wiki is the registration roster for Intuit Security – If you’re not on it you cannot get in. If you haven’t signed up already, do it here
- There is ample power all over the place!
- Come early (9am), nosh on some breakfast, and help us set up!
There are some additional rules that our venue sponsor has asked us to instantiate:
- Alcohol consumption must be moderated – we will be passing out drink tickets, and there will be a droid manning the keg (need a volunteer for this!)
- Safety conditions: There will be both security personnel and intuit employees on site to help maintain a high level of safety
- BarCamp is limited to the first floor – please do not attempt to obtain access to any other floors
Given the previous track record of BarCamp, nobody is expecting anything out of the ordinary. Lets keep on our streak of successful and pleasant barcamps and show Intuit how awesome of a community we are!
This time around we should have floorplan maps printed up on the walls to show everyone where the food, snack, presentation and restroom areas are.
Barcamp is upon us!

Greetings campers!
BarCamp San Diego 4 is upon us, this time at Intuit’s campus (link/map) in Carmel Valley.
There are a ton of activities planned for Saturday evening, somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 campers signed up so far on our wiki. It’s happening in the middle of November (the 15th and 16th), so make sure you have no plans!
This season we can only have 250 people total at the event, so if you’d like to come, please make your way to the wiki and add yourself. The venue is using the wiki as the official roster for who is going.
Things are lining up nicely – The planners are getting excited, the sponsors are getting REALLY excited and you should be too :)
here are some pictures of the venue!

T minus 3 days!
Posted by Dan
Hey Everyone.
BarcampSd is only three days out! I hope you have some idea of what you want to talk about, I know I do :)
Oh, we’ll need people who have ipod nano gen2 or later, or video ipods to bring fully charged ipods. Belkin was kind enough to give us 6 ‘tune talk’ radios which can be plugged into ipods to record sessions.
I’m jazzed, how about you?
BarCamp San Diego Announces New Sponsors

Participatory gathering of geeks has received commitments from new sponsors and continues to seek more
San Diego, CA 21 May, 2007
BarCamp San Diego has officially signed six sponsors for the June 2-3 event. wiseGEEK, Opera, Divx, Joyent, Microsoft, and MindTouch have each committed financial support to San Diego’s first BarCamp.
BarCamp is an event where alpha geeks, industry professionals and others passionate about internet culture, technology, and life online can meet and share ideas and projects. It is built on the philosophy that anyone who builds or uses the internet on a regular basis has something to learn and something to teach, so every attendee is also expected to be a presenter.
Traditionally, BarCamp events are free to the attendees, based on the help of industry sponsors who provide funds to pay for such necessities as food, beer, and internet access hardware. BarCamp San Diego has raised about 50% of its projected budget, and continues to seek sponsorships from anyone interested in tapping into this highly active and creative community of geeks.
The existing sponsors vary as much in size of business as they do in geography. DivX (http://www.divx.com/) is a San Diego-based electronic media company. MindTouch (http://www.mindtouch.com/) is a local business-services start up, located in the Little Italy section of San Diego. Joyent (http://joyent.com/) is a northern California-based company that builds collaboration and communication tools. wiseGEEK (http://www.wisegeek.com/) is a remotely-managed informational question and answer content site, with contributors from all over the globe. Opera (http://www.opera.com/) is an Oslo, Norway-based company responsible for creating the well-respected web browser of the same name. Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/en/us/default.aspx) is a well-known software company based in Redmond, Washington.
In addition to these companies who donated money, BarCamp is being sponsored by Technical Training Resources (http://www.technicaltrainingresources.com/index.php), who will be providing the facilities for the gathering. TTR has given BarCamp access to all three of its classrooms, as well as parking lot and courtyard areas which will be used for presentations and other activities.

Planning Meeting Successful!
Posted by Dan
So outside of the slight snag that the date/time we chose was somehow randomly the same date/time as the ‘tapping event’ the venue was holding where they passed out free beer – all was great! We ended up having to move shop to Chevys in the same parking lot
Once we all got our food and drinks it was down to business. We seemingly rifled through all the tasks and assigned work, decided on a date and venue and only left the tshirts and logos on the table to be done.
Heres the Loadout:
Project Manager (aka Cat Herder): Patrick/moko Sponsor Wrangler: Dan/viss Public Relations: Lindsey Budget: Alex/emp and Patrick Shirts: Billy/cannibal and Phelan Blog: Lisa/adora Logo: waiting for Enrique/nrek to throw a few more in the pot
